# Odak 2026: Özgür Yapay Zekâ - Etkin Katılım Çağrısı (Call for Participation)

**Odak 2026** is an international conference organised by Özgür Yazılım Derneği (Free Software Association in Turkey), to be held for the first time on **Sunday, 13 December 2026**, at the **Barış Manço Cultural Centre**, Kadıköy, İstanbul, Turkey. The conference will be free of charge, conducted in English and Turkish, and open to everyone with something to say about the freedom of artificial intelligence and generative systems.

Held this past April after a long time, ÖzgürKon 2026: The 3rd International Free Software Conference, attracted considerable interest, bringing together many speakers and participants from a wide range of fields. The assertion in ÖzgürKon’s call for participation that the proliferation of generative systems known as “artificial intelligence” has brought the struggle for free software into a new phase found resonance in the fact that a substantial majority of the session proposals submitted to ÖzgürKon focused on artificial intelligence.

These developments gave rise to the idea of holding another conference focused on current issues, complementing ÖzgürKon’s broad scope. Inspired by this idea, the inaugural **Odak 2026** is being organised under the theme “Free Artificial Intelligence: Public Data, Public Model”, to discuss the concept of artificial intelligence, now the focus of global attention within the framework of free software.

With only a few exceptions, today’s conferences and seminars on artificial intelligence are structured almost entirely around using proprietary generative systems as services, rather than around the people who create AI systems and reflect on them. These conditions have made an alternative conference necessary: one that makes room not for those who reproduce property relations through the outputs of AI models trained on data stolen from our people, but for those who design, build and develop AI tools, and who devote thought and effort to examining these tools’ effects on life, relations of production, society, culture, policy and computing.

The philosophy of free software is neither static nor dogmatic. On the contrary, it has consistently renewed itself and adapted to circumstances in response to new technologies and shifts in the broader context, repeatedly reaffirming its historical validity in the process. To further this progress, Odak has made it one of the conference’s goals to work towards a definition of “free artificial intelligence” from a progressive, labour-centred perspective grounded in the social value of software, while examining the AI systems that are bringing about a paradigm shift in free software.

At the same time, it has become necessary to go further, moving beyond the technical and computing aspects of the subject to discuss its professional and social implications, its bearing on labour–capital relations, and its effects on workers. For this reason, Bilişim Emekçileri Sendikası (IT Workers’ Union in Turkey) and TMMOB Bilgisayar Mühendisleri Odası (Chamber of Computer Engineers of Turkey) are also partners in Odak.

In this context, Odak welcomes proposals for talks, seminars, lectures, panels, forums, workshops and other formats on topics including, first and foremost, “free artificial intelligence”; the production, development and reproducibility of language models and other AI systems, and their effects on life, ecology and society; artificial intelligence from the perspective of labour-capital relations and relations of production; the effects of artificial intelligence on art; and the use of artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.

**We invite people not only from the field of computing, but from all industries and fields affected by AI technologies, to join the conference as speakers or participants and to take an active part. If you have thoughts and something to say about the freedom of artificial intelligence or its effects on our lives, Odak is yours.**
